Managing your Menus

Menus allow you to customize your main menu and your footer menu. You can link to Pages you've created within your site or to external pages outside of your site. Once you've added your links, our drag-and-drop functionality allows you to easily arrange your menu items in the order that you choose.

All of our Themes have the capability of adding three levels of menu items to your main menu (the footer menu only allows for top-level menu items). This feature allows you to have sub-menus that only appear when a visitor hovers over the top-level menu item.

Creating a Menu

Below are step by step instructions on how to create your menu:

  1. Click on the "Menus" link in the main administrative menu
  2. If you'd like to add a new menu, click on the "Add Menu" button at the top right of the page, enter a Title and save.
  3. To add or edit links on your menu, click the “Action” button located to the right of your menu's title and then click “List Links
  4. To add a new menu item, click the "Add Link" button at the top right corner of the page
  5. Enter the Name of the link (this is what will appear on your site), any custom CSS classes that you'd like to apply to your menu item (leave this blank if you aren't sure what it means), your Path (this is what tells the browser where your link will go), and your Target (this tells your browser if it should open your link in a new window or the existing one)
**Note: The type of Path you enter for a Page you've created is called a Relative Path, and will generally look something like this: "page/my-page-title" -- For an external link, you use what is called an Absolute Path, which generally will look something like this: "http://www.my-site-url.com"
  6. If you are linking to one of our Built-in Pages, you should see “System Paths” listed for you on the right side. You can just click on the one you want and the fields will be filled in automatically. You can also change the Title if you do not wish to use the default
  7. Click "Add" to save your new menu item

This will bring you back to your list of links. Once you have entered all of your menu items, you will need to arrange them.

Arrange your Menu items

To rearrange your menu items, follow the steps below:

  1. Click and hold on the small black up/down arrow next to the menu item you wish to move
  2. Drag it up or down, depending where you want it to show in your menu
  3. If you want it to be a top-level item, keep it as far to the left as possible. If you want it to be a sub-menu item (part of a dropdown list), pull it down underneath your top-level item until it shifts to the right a bit. Again, you may have three levels of menu items for your main menu - so you can even pull another menu item underneath of that item if you wish too.
**Note: You have to drag the arrow over top of the other arrows in order for it to jump above or below them. If you drag it to any part other than that, it will not jump there.

Your menu arrangement will be saved automatically, so simply test it out on your site to make sure it looks the way you want it.

Assign your Menus

The Primary Menu is automatically assigned for both the main menu and the footer menu. If you have created your own menu and would like to assign it to either menu location, follow the steps below:

  1. Click "Configuration" from the main administrative menu
  2. Choose "Website Settings" from the list
  3. Scroll down until you see the fields for "Primary Menu" and "Footer Menu"
  4. Click the drop-down arrow for the menu you'd like to replace, and choose your new menu from the list
  5. Scroll down and click "Update" to save your settings

Once you've done this, your new menu will be visible on your site. You can always switch back to the default menu or edit your menu if you wish.
